It is possible to enter Bolivia from San Pedro de Atacama in Chile taking a tour through the amazing Salar de Uyuni. The transfer from San Pedro to the Bolivian border is included in the tour.
- San Pedro de Atacama - Uyuni (basic private tour); around 08.00 hrs you will be picked up from your hotel in San Pedro de Atacama to depart to the border at Hito Cajones. Then you will visit Laguna Verde (green lagoon) and the Salvador Dalí Desert.
The journey continues passing the hot springs of Chalviri and the geysers of Sol de Mañana. Then you will arrive at Laguna Colorada (the red lagoon), followed by a drive that passes the Stone Tree and that goes through the Silolí Desert to the lagoons Shiarkota, Honda and Hedionda. Then it will be time for a snack.
Next your travel will go on passing the Ollagüe Volcano and through the Salar de Chiguana to San Juan, where you will spend the night in a basic lodge.
On the second day you will leave early for the Salar de Uyuni.
On the way you will visit the Galaxia Cave, you will see piles of salt at the spot where salt is extracted and you will visit Isla Incahuasi, where you can walk over the island along the huge cacti and enjoy the fabulous views over the salt flats. You will have lunch here as well.
Later in the afternoon you will arrive in Uyuni.
- San Pedro de Atacama - Uyuni (basic tour in group, private or luxury private tour);
you will depart around 07.30 hrs from San Pedro de Atacama. After formalities at the Chilean border you will have a transfer of an hour to the Bolivian border. The Bolivian border is a shack in the middle of the desert, worth your first photo of the trip! You will get a stamp in your passport after paying the tourist tax. Today you will visit Laguna Blanca, Laguna Verde, Salvador Dalí, hot spings, the geysers of Sol de Mañana and Laguna Colorada (the red lagune). You will spend the night in a lodge close to this lagoon.
The next day you will start around 05.30 hrs with a visit to Laguna Colorada. Then you will get to see the Arbol de Piedra (stone tree), Laguna Ramaditas, Laguna Chiarcota, Laguna Onda, Laguna Hedionda, Laguna Cañapa and Ollagüe volcano. There´s a lot of wildlife to see today as well. You will spend the night in San Juan or San Pedro, both typical villages of the Lípez area.
On the last day you will visit San Juan Necropolis (mummy graveyard), Inca Huasi (Fish Island) and the Salt Hotel made entirely out of salt. You will see chunks of salt and the process of manufacturing domestic salt and handicrafts made out of salt. At the Train Cemetery near Uyuni you will find antique English trains. Those were brought to Bolivia many years ago and are no longer in use.
Arrival in Uyuni at appr. 15.00 hrs.
- San Pedro de Atacama - San Pedro de Atacama (basic private tour);
around 08.00 hrs you will be picked up from your hotel in San Pedro if you stay in the centre. Otherwise you will receive information where the tour starts of.
You will set off to the border at Hito Cajones. After the formalities at the border you will head for Laguna Verde (the green lagoon) where you will make a stop to overlook the emerald green water. Then you will continue to Laguna Colorada, the red lagoon and you will cross the Salvador Dalí Desert.
Next break will be at the hot springs of Chalviri and the Sol de Mañana geysers, the stone tree and the Silolí Desert. You will see several lagoons; Laguna Shiarkota, Laguna Honda and Laguna Hedionda. At the last one it will be time for a snack.
Then your drive continues passing the Ollagüe Volcano and the salt flat of Chiguana to San Juan.
In San Juan you will spend the night in a shared dorm room of a basic lodge.
On the second day you will have breakfast around 08.00 hrs and then you will leave for the Salar de Uyuni. On the way you will visit the Galaxia Cave and the island Incahuasi where you can walk over the island along the huge cacti and enjoy the fabulous views over the salt flats. You will have lunch here as well.
You will see chunks of salt and the process of manufacturing domestic salt and the Ojos de Sal. You will watch the sunset while you enjoy an aperetif.
Later on you arrive in Uyuni where you will spend the night. The stay overnight in Uyuni is not included.
On the third en last day of the tour you will leave around 08.00 hrs from Uyuni for Laguna Colorada. During the day you will visit San Cristóbal, Culpina, Villamar and Valle de las Rocas; the rock valley.
Then you will arrive at Hito Cajones for your transfer to San Pedro.
