Tours in and around Sucre
1 day tours:
  • City Tour Sucre (half or full day); during the walk through the old centre you will visit the most important churches and houses with beautiful wooden balconies of the colonial white city of Sucre. You will visit the main Plaza and the Casa de la Libertad, the San Francisco church, the Recoleta Plaza and museum, the University Museums Charcas and the ASUR textile museum.
    If you choose to do a full day tour then you can also visit the castle La Glorieta at the end of the tour by car. This is a surprising building five kilometres outside of Sucre.
City of Sucre
  • Tarabuco Sunday Market; get a flavour of the culture of Bolivia with this private tour as you visit the traditional market of Tarabuco. The Tarabuco culture is one of the oldest indigenous cultures of South America which has preserved its values and customs. Situated about seventy kilometres from Sucre amongst rolling hills, Tarabuco has colorful markets selling beautiful handicrafts and weavings with geometric designs.
    The market is the meeting point for the Yamparas Indians who come here to sell their products. Walk around and meet the friendly locals dressed in elaborately woven ponchos and decorative 'monteras' (leather hats shaped after Spanish Conquistador helmets).
Tarabuco market Tarabuco market
  • Dino Tour (half day); in 1994 at a cement factory a limestone wall of 25,000 m² literally covered by dinosaur tracks was discovered. To visit the site you will be picked up at nine and you will be brought to the Creteaceous Park in about half an hour.
    Your guide at the site will take you around for an hour between huge real size replicas of the dinosaurs. From a viewpoint you can watch the over 5,000 footprints of 294 different dinosaurs.
    Afterwards you can enter the visitor´s centre and the small museum. Then you will be brought back to Sucre.
Dinosaur tracks
  • Inca Trail (half day); this easy hike of about three hrs starts at the chapel of Chataquila on the rim of the Cordillera de los Frailes. You walk down the Inca trail to Chaunaca while you enjoy impressive views all around. The hike is 95% downhill and very easy. At Chaunaca the car will pick you up to bring you to the Ravelo River. Here you can take a rest, have a footbath or a (cold!) swim in the water.
    You will get some fruit served as well as coffee or tea with cookies before the tour ends.
Maragua crater
  • Inca Trail and Maragua Crater; this hike (6 + 6 km) starts at the chapel of Chataquila on the rim of the Cordillera de los Frailes. You walk down the Inca trail to Chaunaca while you enjoy impressive views all around.
    At Chaunaca the car will pick you up to bring you to the Ravelo River where you can have a break or a swim if you like. Then the car will cross the river and take you to the crater of Maragua. Or you can hike up in four hours to the dinosaur tracks at Niñu Mayu. This is only recommended for experienced hikers.
    Don´t want to do any hiking but just want to enjoy the view from the car? It´s still worth the trip! Around the villages is a lot to see as well; locals are happy to show you their weavings or you can visit the cemetery, the waterfalls and the sacred cave under the waterfall of Maragua.

Maragua Trekking Maragua Trekking
  • Horseback riding around Sucre (half day); for this horseback riding tour you don´t need to have experience. The difficulty of the tour is easy to moderate, depending on your experience. The distance on horseback you will cover is 12 km in about 3 hrs.
    Around 09.30 you will leave for the place where you will meet your guide en get the horse that fits you best.
    By horse you will start the ride in the middle of the twin hills, Sica Sica and Churuquella, to Cabezas. On the way, you will pass through small communities and cross the farms of El Abra, Rumi Rumi, Azari, Siwaya and Cabezas.
    You will have beautiful views of the city and enjoy the life at the countryside that surrounds you everywhere.
    The guide will arrange transport for you to bring you back to the city.
    About 13.00 you will get back to Sucre.

  • Ancient rock paintings; a hike of five hours (19 km) that starts about an hour from Sucre at the chapel of Chataquila and follows the rim of the Cordillera de los Frailes. The trail will take you through impressive, rugged landscape with splendid views to the rock paintings in the Caves of the Inca and of the Puma. After visiting the sites you walk down to the river, which you follow until you reach the village of Chaunaca.
    From here you will be brought back to Sucre.
Rock paintings
  • Ancient rock paintings and Inca Trail; this hike of six to seven hours (22 km) combines a visit to the rock paintings in the Caves of the Inca and of the Puma with the hike down the Inca trail. Walking down to the rock paintings you will have splendid views over the valley of the Rio Ravelo. After visiting the rock paintings you walk back to Chataquila and from there you go down the Inca trail to the village of Chaunaca.
    By car you will return to Sucre.
Inca Trail
2 days tour:
  • Inca Trail and Maragua Crater; from the chapel of Chataquila on the rim of the Cordillera de los Frailes you walk down the Inca trail to Chaunaca while you enjoy impressive views all around. At Chaunaca the car will pick you up and take you to the Ravelo River where you will have a break. You can swim here if you like.
    By car you will cross the river and go to the crater of Maragua. From here you can hike up in about four hours to the dinosaur tracks at Niñu Mayu the same day or the next morning.
    With your guide you settle yourselve in the country houses that have a kitchen and hot showers. Dinner will be prepared before dark because there´s no electricity and you will enjoy a romantic dinner at candlelight in the middle of the crater.
    Don´t want to do any hiking but just want to enjoy the views from the car? It´s still worth the trip!
    Around the village there´s a lot to see as well. Locals are happy to show you their weavings. You can also visit the cemetery, the waterfalls and the Sacred Cave under the waterfall.
Inca Trail Maragua
3 days tour:
  • Trekking Cordillera de los Frailes; the Cordillera de los Frailes is characterized a diversity of attractions which are a combination of beautiful nature, interesting ethnography, culture and archaeology. During the trekking you will see several of these places. In this area lives an ethnical group called Jalq´a. These people in general do not like it to be photographed. Respect this and if you want to take a photo ask for permission first.
    Day 1: By private transport you will go from Sucre to Chataquila where the trekking begins. From the chapel situated on the rim of the Cordillera de los Frailes you walk down the Inca trail in appr. 2.5 hours to Chaunaca while you enjoy impressive views. The hike is 95% downhill and very easy however you do need good hiking boots. From here you will walk in four hours to Potolo where the Jalq´a live and where you will spend the night in a comfortable cabaña. In Potolo you will find typical weavings in the workshop and there is a museum of traditional medicines.
    * Option: In the dry season there you can hike in six or seven hours through riverbeds and canyons to Potolo. Then you will NOT walk the Inca Trail.
    Day 2: There is a long day lying ahead of you; today you will have to walk about eight hours. From Potolo you will make a spectacular hike to Maragua or Irupampa, both are situated inside the crater. The views are great and you will pass the small village of Chullpa´s on the way. After appr. six hours hiking you will visit the dinosaur footprints at Niñu Mayu. From here it takes another two hours to get to Maragua where you will sleep in a cabaña. Maragua is situated in the middle the Maragua Crater, named after the village.
    Day 3: This is an easier day. You will start with a visit of an hour to a local family where you can see how they weave and how they live. Then the hike continues from Maragua to Irupampa and onto Quila Quila, with its colonial church. This hike takes about three to four hours. In the surroundings many pre Colombian archaeological artefacts have been found. From Quila Quila you will visit the monoliths of Marca Rumi. The monoliths have been carved with pictographs. Visiting Marca Rumi takes an hour and a half, than you will travel back to Sucre in about two hours.
Marca Rumi Cabaña Jalq´a weaving
4 days tour:
  • Trekking in the Cordillera de los Frailes; the first three days of this trekking are equal to those of the 3-days trekking in de Cordillera de los Frailes. At the end of the third day you will spend the night in Quila Quila with a local family.

    Day 4: The day starts with a 30 minute drive in 4WD from Quila Quila to the base of Obispo Hill which summit lies at 3,453 m. You have the option to climb Obispo Hill (at an extra cost) in two hours; this climb is not for people with vertigo. Then the last part of this beautiful trek ends in Cachi Mayu after a four hour hike. Here the car will pick you up and drive you back to Sucre.
